Ozone is a form of oxygen whose highly unstable nature (due to its extra oxygen atom) makes it an excellent oxidizing agent; 1.5 times greater than chlorine. Ozone is a benign, non-persistent molecule with a very short half-life in water. It is used extensively in bottled water and frequently for municipal potable tap water.  Ozone does not produce halogenated compounds such as Trihalomethanes, which are strongly suspected to be carcinogenic, and is the most effective treatment for Cyryptosporidium.
